Drive an overlay live

During a match you change field values, not layouts. The panel and controller keys both write to the same live-value store, so you can use them together.

Build the overlay first. See Build an overlay.

Use the Live values panel

The Live values panel is the manual method, and it is available on every page.

  1. In the top bar, select Live values. When overlays are on air, the button also shows how many, for example 2 on air.
  2. The panel opens on the right side of the page. To close it, select Live values again or use the panel's close button.

A section appears only when it has content.

SectionControls
OverlaysOne row for each overlay, with its canvas and an on-air switch. Turn the switch on to show the overlay. Turn it off to remove it.
One card for each timerThe time, its state, and Start or Stop, and Reset…
TeamsThe stats, penalties and players of the selected team. See Record team stats live.
Numbers− and + for each number field. You can also type a value.
TextA box for each text field. Type the new text.

If you have no overlays, the panel shows No overlays yet. Select Open Overlays to build one.

Timers

A timer card shows the time, the state and the start time. The time reads m:ss, with tenths added below 60 seconds. The state is Counting up, Counting down, Stopped or Finished.

  • Start starts the clock. While it is running, the button reads Stop.
  • Reset… sets the clock back to its start time after you confirm. If the clock is running, the confirmation says so.

A countdown timer stops at 0:00 and shows Finished. You cannot start it again until you reset it.

When the show has a sport with periods, the game clock's card also has Next period…. See Record team stats live.

Use controller keys

You can bind each overlay action to a key. Once play starts, keys are the better method.

ActionDoes
Change overlay valueAdds an amount to a field. A negative amount decreases the value.
Set overlay valueSets a field to a fixed value.
Overlay timerstart, stop, toggle or reset on a timer field.
Show or hide overlayshow, hide or toggle an overlay.

For the actions on teams, penalties and players, see Record team stats live.

Assign the actions in the key-assignment dialog. See Connect a controller and Controller actions.

The action you use most in a match is changing the score. Bind one Change overlay value key to home_score with an amount of 1.

Show and hide

An overlay shows on its canvas while it is on air. In the Live values panel, select the overlay's row to turn its switch on or off, or select Go on air or Take off air in the overlay editor's toolbar. While the overlay is on air, its visibility policy decides what happens during a takeover:

  • Always on top keeps the overlay above all other content, takeovers included.
  • Auto-hide on takeover hides the overlay while a hot button or a sequence controls the canvas, and shows it again after the takeover.

If nothing else is playing on the canvas, the overlay shows over the canvas's idle clip.

Override the policy for one clip

A hot button or a sequence cue can force one overlay to show or hide while it plays. When it stops, the overlay goes back to its policy.

  1. Open the overlay settings:
    • For a hot button, use the Overlays section on the Interactions tab.
    • For a sequence cue, select the overlay directives icon on the cue row.
  2. Select the overlay.
  3. Select Force show or Force hide.

Use Force show on a replay clip to keep the scorebug on screen. Use Force hide on a full-screen takeover to remove a permanent sponsor bug.
